چکیده

We report low-temperature and high-pressure measurements of the electrical resistivity T of the antiferromagnetic compound NiS2 in its high-pressure metallic state. The form of T , p suggests the presence of a quantum phase transition at a critical pressure pc=76 5 kbar. Near pc, the temperature variation of T is similar to that observed in NiS2−xSex near the critical composition x=1, where metallic antiferromagnetism is suppressed at ambient pressure. In both cases, T varies approximately as T1.5 over a wide range below 100 K. This lets us assume that the high-pressure metallic phase of stoichiometric NiS2 also develops itinerant antiferromagnetism, which becomes suppressed at pc. However, on closer analysis, the resistivity exponent in NiS2 exhibits an undulating variation with temperature not seen in NiSSe x=1 . This difference in behavior may be due to the effects of spin-fluctuation scattering of charge carriers on cold and hot spots of the Fermi surface in the presence of quenched disorder, which is higher in NiSSe than in stoichiometric NiS2.

Atomic Diffusion in the Surface State of Mott Insulator NiS2

We present resistivity measurements of Mott insulator NiS2 single crystals after heat treatment. We find a strong increase of the low temperature resistivity that relaxes back towards the pristine behaviour over several days with a time constant of 45 h at room temperature. The low temperature resistivity has previously been shown to be dominated by surface conduction [1]. Consequently, the cha...

Erratum: Large Fermi Surface of Heavy Electrons at the Border of Mott Insulating State in NiS2

One early triumph of quantum physics is the explanation why some materials are metallic whereas others are insulating. While a treatment based on single electron states is correct for most materials this approach can fail spectacularly, when the electrostatic repulsion between electrons causes strong correlations. Not only can these favor new and subtle forms of matter, such as magnetism or sup...

2 4 M ar 1 99 9 Anisotropic resistivity of the antiferromagnetic insulator Bi

The anisotropic resistivities of Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 1−x Er x Cu 2 O 8 single crystals were measured and analyzed from 4.2 to 500 K with special interest taken in the parent antiferromagnetic insulator with x=1.0. Although the resistivity is semiconducting along both the in-plane and out-of-plane directions, the temperature dependences are found to be significantly different. As a result, the resistiv...

Aspects of unconventional density waves

Recently many people discuss unconventional density waves (i.e. unconventional charge density waves (UCDW) and unconventional spin density waves (USDW)). Unlike in conventional density waves, the quasiparticle spectrum in these systems is gapless. Also these systems remain metallic. Indeed it appears that there are many candidates for UDW. The low temperature phase of α-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4, th...

Stripes and Charge Transport Properties of High-tc Cuprates

Unusual features in the in-plane charge transport in lightly hole-doped La2−xSrxCuO4 single crystals are described. Notably, both the in-plane resistivity and the Hall coefficient show a metallic behavior at moderate temperatures even in the long-range-ordered antiferromagnetic phase, which obviously violates the Mott-Ioffe-Regel criterion for the metallic transport and can hardly be understood...
